Overview

This guide explains how to create groups in Novorender directly from the Model Tree using file structure and attributes. The process allows you to automatically group and update elements based on their folder paths.

1. Creating a Group from the Model Tree

  1. Navigate to Files and Attributes -> Model tree in your project.

  2. Here, you can see all project folders, subfolders, and their associated files.

  3. In the Model Tree, navigate to the desired folder (e.g., Design Models / Electro).

  4. Click the three dots menu next to the folder name.

  5. Select Save to Groups.

  6. In the dialog box:

    • Rename the collection if desired (default name is based on the folder path).

    • Example: rename Design Models / Electro to Design Models Test.

  7. Click Save.

5. Viewing and Editing the New Group

  1. Open the Groups widget.

  2. The newly created group will be highlighted.

  3. Click Edit to see group criteria:

    • Name: Path property.

    • Value: Folder path (e.g., design models/electro).

    • Search Type: Unexact search — to include all current sub-elements of the files and future files in the folder

6. Understanding the "Path" Property

  • Select an object (example: a lamp pole).

  • In the Properties widget, locate the Path property.

    • This shows the folder hierarchy, e.g.,
      Design Models / Electro / [file_name.dwg]

  • The Model Tree also highlights where the selected object resides.

7. Automatic Group Updates

  • Because the group is linked to the folder path:

    • Any new files uploaded to the folder are automatically added to the group.

    • Any existing files in the folder are already included.

  • Clicking Search will display all matched objects

8. Visualizing the Group in 3D

  1. In the 3D view, enable View Only Selected to see just the group’s elements.

  2. The system assigns a default group color automatically.

  3. You can change the group color manually at any time.
